I have problems with outlook web access.Users with mail boxes on the second server get page not found error message when accessing their mail thru owa and the url changes to the internal address of the second server.I tested this within the LAN and there is no problem. I don't want to do the FE\BE configuration because eventually I will decommision the first exch server but in the mean time I want this to work. I am not using smart host or connectors just the default smpt virtual server. If you need any more info pls let me knowStephen
In order to do proxying between servers and NOT referrals you must use a front-end server. You could make the second server internet accessbile so when the users on the second server get a referal they will be able to access it. You cannot have mailboxes on a front-end server so you can't make the first server a front-end. You would need a third server that is configured as a front-end to provide access to both mailbox servers through a single URL.

Thank you for your reply. I was trying to avoid the FE\BE configuration but I guess now I don't have a choice I will go with the FE\BE.
