Here's what I've done so far.

  • Setup a generic AD and Exchange account - it has an email associated with it
  • Made myself a delegate to that email account (Send On.... Grant this permission to:)
  • Manually type in the email address for the generic account in the From field
  • Results in a System Administrator undeliverable email
  • An aside: The generic account doesn't show up under the GAL but under All Address Lists --> All Users
Also what I find odd. If I go into the address book, populate the From field from there, it actually works. But if I manually type in the email address it errors out. Why is that?

Which version and service pack of Exchange are you running? (there have been changes over the course of versions and even patches)

I would imagine if you gave yourself Send As in ADUC you would be able to send email by typing in the address in the from field. The difference is the Send on Behalf and Send As permissions.
